A Network Marketing Nightmare – Don’t let this Happen to You!

in News, Alerts, Warnings & Scams

A Network Marketing Nightmare Dont let this Happen to YouYou may find this a little bit worrying. You may or may not believe it could happen to you. But it does happen… more often than you think. It’s already happened with two major companies in 2010.

Some “network marketing” company managers are so stupid, that they don’t even know what their primary asset is. With their massive greed and over inflated egos, they let the distributors do all the hard work, then they pull the rug out from underneath.

Imagine building a network marketing downline up to the point where you’re earning $46,000 per month, then in the first days of the New Year, you get this letter in the mail…

Dear Independent Representative,

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of Body Electric, and to announce some very exciting changes and enhancements to our program.

Body Electric has spent the past 5 years developing a huge base of satisfied customers through both direct sales and network marketing. We’re very pleased with how our large our customer base has grown. We choose to make our valued and loyal customers our number one priority.

As we move forward into this new year, Body Electric has elected to renew our commitment to provide excellence and service and support to our customers. In 2001, we will offer lower prices, expanded specials and an exciting reward program. Of course we will continue to provide the best products available. Our customers get results, we like it that way.

To more effectively focus on our loyal customers, we are eliminating the need to qualify for bonuses. We have replaced the present commission structure with a one-time referral payout for new customer orders. Anyone who is a customer and refers a new customer will receive a bonus on that first order. It’s our way of thanking you for helping us spread the good news on Body Electric’s unique products and philosophy.

We hope you are as pleased with these program enhancements as we are. Thank you again for your support of Body Electric. We hope you will continue to enjoy the benefits of our exceptional products, and hope you will continue to promote our products to others.

With best wishes for a happy and healthy new year,

Sincerely Yours,

Body Electric Vice President of Operations

“We hope you are as pleased with these program enhancements as we are”… Can you believe this company had the nerve to write that after effectively terminating all of their distributors?

“We are eliminating the need to qualify for bonuses”… You don’t have to worry about qualifying for that $46,000 monthly residual bonus anymore.

Body Electric sent this letter to their reps in early January 2001. Four years later, the company got its just deserts – it went bankrupt.

The two major companies who have done exactly this in 2010 are XELR8, the makers of the Bazi nutritional beverage in January, and iLearningGlobal in February. Fruta Vida/Pro Image waved goodbye to their reps in April 2009.

These companies were digging themselves into a financial hole, and for them, shutting down their MLM operations seemed to be the best way (easiest?) out.

In the case of XELR8, being a publicly traded MLM company, they had stockholders to please. That move has backfired as revenues are well down and the stock price has tanked. Hmm, it turns out their real assets were their hard working distributors.

What emotions do you feel when this happens to You?

Richard Dennis was a top earner at Body Electric when he unexpectedly received this news. That day he felt an overwhelming burden of responsibility on his shoulders for the pain of his faithful team.

When you get to the top, you feel very close to the people who’ve been with you all the way. They’ve put their trust in you to lead them, to help them achieve their dreams. They believe in your best judgement, your choice of vehicle…

I can only imagine it to be gut wrenching.

How do you make sure this doesn’t happen to you?

Read your Policies and Procedures!

Body Electric had every legal right to terminate their MLM pay plan. So did iLearningGlobal. Here’s exactly what they laid out in their Policies. There is no easier exit clause than this…

“… iLG reserves the right to terminate all Marketer Agreements upon 30 days notice if the Company elects to: (1) cease business operations; (2) dissolve as a business entity; or (3) terminate distribution of its products and/or services via direct selling channels.”

It was written. They had every intention of using it. And they did.

Don’t stake your future on companies who can do this to you at their will. It’s just not worth the risk.

To your MLM success,

Wayne Wu

Hi Wayne,

thanks for sharing your warnings. Yet, I suspect that they will go unnoticed, over and over again. That’s the sad truth about human psyche. How many people do you meet who know about that and stick to companies like that knowingly ? “They would never do that.” or “They need their marketers. Why would they do that ?”

Take care

Hey Oliver,

Yeah my friend. Unfortunately they will go unnoticed. But I will continue to warn people. If only one person heeds to my message out of 100, then I’ve done my job and really helped someone. Thanks for the kind comment.

Hey Wayne

I could not believe the arrogance in that Body Electric email.

Thanks for posting that and also thanks for showing how easy it is for NM companies to easily drop their distributors.

Hey Pete,

My pleasure. I too was totally shocked at the level of arrogance in that letter. “We’ve spent the past 5 years developing a HUGE base of satisfied customers…” my jaw literally dropped when I read that. For a company to take the credit for all of the hard work of the distributors is just beyond belief. Anyway, they got their just deserts.

That would be a horrible shock! Thank you for posting this and bringing awareness to marketers.

It’s also a good reminder of the importance of having our own personal brand and list!

Hey Stacy,

Building your own list is a good solution, but there is a right way and a wrong way to do this. You’ve given me a great idea for a new post. Thanks.

Wow,

What horrible shock and horror such a thing would be. It is definitely a good point about not having too many of your eggs in one basket, particularly when the control of that basket is in someone else’s hands.

Nice word of warning.

Hey Steve,

I agree to a good extend about “having too many eggs in one basket”, having multiple streams of income is a good thing, but I don’t personally believe that joining multiple MLM companies for that purpose is a good idea.

This industry is built on relationships. If a leader is a person of integrity and has built good relationships with his/her leaders, they should be able to find a new home. But they’ll need to make damn sure that this doesn’t happen again.

These horror stories are like something in the movies, except they are true. but as you rightly point out, the Policies and Procedures make it clear that the company can do such things.

Most people would read all the small print before signing to buy a half million dollar contract to buy a house, yet in our profession when the earning potential is at least that, most don’t bother to read the P & P’s.

Thanks for this and the work you do in researching the details of these stories.

Hey Charlie,

Thank you Charlie, I’ll beat this drum over and over again until people get it. If you don’t intend to be successful in MLM, then don’t bother reading the policies and procedures.

Verification is indeed important. Before plunging into the unknown we have to at least make a study of the pros and cons. You’re very generous in sharing this important warning. :-)

Hey Walter,

Welcome to my blog and thanks for leaving me a comment. You’re right, verification is definitely important. Unfortunately, many people don’t bother weighing up the pros and cons.

Wayne, don’t most companies have that clause? I mean nothing is guranteed in this world, other than death and taxes!

Best,
Lavinia

Hi Lavinia,

I will discuss this “money’s in the list” topic for another post…

I’m not sure about most, but certainly NOT ALL companies have this easy exit clause. In fact, if you look at the companies who have staying power, you won’t find this clause anywhere in their contracts with the distributors.

I agree, that is a lot of nerve to actually write that to their distributors. Wow! Sadly shocking.

That’s a great tip, to take a look at the terms of service for your company.

Thanks for this great post!

Oh ok wow in that first paragraph I thought you were talking about the U.S. gov.t I guess not but lots of parallels.

A real shame that idiots are sometimes in charge. I guess when you are so far removed and everything including people becomes numbers you forget what built your company to begin with.

The best be would be to cut some officer’s salaries or payouts and let the backbone of the companies keep doing what have done make the company money.

Hey Steve,

Yeah, I was trying to grab people’s attention with the first paragraph. You’re right, there are people who start network marketing companies who have never built a downline, and have no idea what its like to be out in the field. When success hits them, they think they’re good man, when it’s not them at all, it’s the guys in the field.

I definitely agree with cutting those executive salaries. They can pay more to the field that way, too. Let those executives build it with the distributors I say!

Hi Wayne,

Excellent post and important topic. I wonder how many people actually read their policies and procedures when they get into a business? I bet the percentage is very, very low.

How devastating for these marketers who have worked so hard to build their businesses.

Hey Heather,

Yeah, unfortunately, the percentage of people who do read their P ‘n’ P’s is very low. Many distributors/reps have paid a dear price for not being aware of their contract. It’s something that’s dear to my heart and I want people to know.

Read before you sign is something that my husband keeps telling me I should do. I suppose I need to listen to him!

Can’t entirely blame MLM companies for doing this out of the blue; however, can’t help but think that somehow this is a sleazy practice.

On a different note, I am really impressed with your knowledge of MLM industry, Wayne. I think you are carving out a great niche for yourself here.

Hey Ana,

Yeah, that’s a wise husband you have there.

MLM companies do have an obligation to support their distributors as much as they can, because without their reps, they are nothing.

And thank you for your words of encouragement, as I am finding my way into a niche, as you have.
