Today I want to talk about a marketing strategy that’s a little bit contrarian to the “YOU, Inc.” business model that most internet network marketers are fully aware of.
In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, “YOU, Inc.” is essentially about positioning yourself as an expert in particular market niche (in this case, network marketing) so that your best prospects can seek you out and benefit from your wisdom.
The problem with “YOU, Inc.” is that it’s not easily “duplicatable” (…I hate that word…) for new partners/distributors. I wouldn’t do this business any other way, but it took me many months to learn and apply all the necessary skills to get Wayne, Inc up and running.
Some people will have the patience and the perseverance to learn how to do it. Others will feel overwhelmed, intimidated and frustrated by the process. Nevertheless, it’s a good thing to help the new guy get results and momentum quickly, wouldn’t you agree?
When we sponsor a new partner, we can take them by the hand through our systems. We can have some great back office training. We can have team meetings and/or conference calls. We can do the 3 way calls. This is all good stuff.
However, it’s still up to the individual to do their own marketing and prospecting. We’re hoping that our team members are making the best use of these tools while they’re building their businesses on their own.
This means there is very little “leverage” in the beginning for the new guy. Leverage will only start to kick in when he or she has built a significant group.
It would be great to create an environment where a new partner can come into an organisation leverage the efforts of the existing team. They contribute a little bit of their own time and effort and/or money and generate new business leads in a much shorter period of time.
Can this be done? Absolutely. It happens through collaboration.
Recently, I started working on a project that will involve the collaborative efforts of team members in my upline and downline. It’s a team project, and the goal is to get results quicker, especially for new people.
More important than results, it’s about building a sense of community and fostering team spirit. This increases retention in the long haul and builds more stable wealth.
Another great thing is people are working in a mastermind environment, where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
So rather than building “YOU, Inc.” or “ME, Inc.”, it’s building “WE, Inc.”, which I believe, has the potential to be A LOT more powerful in terms of getting results quickly.
So what do you think? How can you get more teamwork and team spirit happening in your MLM business?
Perhaps you could give new team members a head start with their online marketing by getting them to contribute to your blog, rather than have them set up their own initially…
If you have successful advertising campaign going, perhaps you can get team members to contribute a small amount of money to that too in return for results…
Every opportunity to boost a downline’s success level is a very exciting thing!
To your MLM success,
Wayne Wu

Hi Wayne,
I’ve seen a couple of “We Inc” blogs & teams. I agree, it has the potential to be very powerful.
I do have to say that I think the “You Inc” business model is the MOST duplicatable model out there. If a person has the drive and desire to make this work, then learning to let others see them, and build around themselves, couldn’t be more duplicatable.
If they are going to flake off, they’ll do it eventually, no matter how many tools and toys you put in their hands. At least that’s what I’ve seen.
I think putting something together for your team is going to build an awesome partnership. Way to go!

Hey Susanna,
Thanks for your insights. You talk about toys. That’s possibly one of the biggest problems – the overwhelming load of toys you can put into the hands of new people, and then they have to go and make it work. But yes, it’s worth it once you do figure it out.
Incredibly interesting point of view, Wayne.
I have to agree with your premises completely: how do you teach someone to build You, Inc quickly enough while still making some kind of money in the process?
I do see what it is you are trying to do with We, Inc, but would be definitely curious to learn how it works for you, especially regarding helping your newbies to get established faster.

Hi Ana,
Thanks. My aim is to help new partners get into profit quicker, but the intention is not to give them unrealistic expectations. They still need to realize it’s probably going to them longer than expected to get the results they want. It’s going to be interesting. I’ll keep you posted.
I like your intentions Wayne, A Strong Foundation is key in my experience, and this takes a bit more time for some, but once you teach others to build a strong foundation, it can be everlasting.
Great Post.
Hello Wayne
You know when you have your business nailed when you can bring in a new team member and they can start to see small results immediately.
That is why so many mlm’s have fast start bonuses.
In my business the first step is to help the new team member to get the first sale. I do this by having proven techniques laid out for them to go apply. They do not have to create anything themselves, that can wait until later when they have experience.
I too am interested to see how your We Inc. progresses.

Hey Peter,
That’s great. Anything you can do to help the new guy get his/her first sale without them having to create anything on their own is going solidify their belief in the business.
Hi Wayne,
Another interesting, well-writtend and thought provoking article.
I can see how it could be helpful to the newbie, but what about when the newbie is no longer a newbie, what happens to ‘we inc’ ? Will the duplicate it?
I am intrigued as to how this will work for you!
All the best,
Lavinia
Hi Lavinia,
Good question. The team work and team project will work even better when newbies become established because they can coach their new guys and they can inject their own flavor into the group.
Hey Wayne,
You’re absolutely right. The You, Inc. model is not easily duplicatable out the gate. It certainly does take time.
I like to think of it as, what can the team members do now so they can start making money and at the same time build their You, Inc. model.
Very interesting take on this, I definitely agree with you.
Have a great day,

You got it man. My intention also to help people learn the skills they need to do their own self branding and marketing.
Hey Wayne,
I must say that this is an interesting topic you have here. I believe the ‘You,Inc’ model works when you keep it simple and you are working with like minded individuals. The moment you try to get all complicated that is when you have to go through a huge learning curve.
Chat with you later…

Great point my friend. The classic KISS principle. Keep It Simple, Stupid.
Wayne,
We adopted the We, Inc. philosophy playing football in high school where everything we did was as a team.
I started this type of thinking working closely with my team and developing new training ideas that has everyone involved.
I would love to hear your results when you finish with the project.

Hey Tommy,
Yeah, great analogy. Life is a team effort, and everyone you work with shares the successes and failures as a collective. Thanks for the vote of confidence and I will keep you posted on the results.
Hi Wayne
yes I agree that collaboration is a very powerful way to build momentum in the team. I think it is important that each partner is developing his/her own online presence. But for the newbie, the leverage of the group can help them through the difficult early stages.
I am sure you will be a great mentor for the group.
all the best
Charlie Holles
Hey Charlie,
Thanks. I think this will give the newbie a real chance to come up to speed with learning the skills they need to go on their own.
Hi Wayne,
I think this is a fabulous idea! It uses leverage from the group as the brand until the individual can build up his own brand. Much like how Mentoring For Free uses the leverage of the mastermind group to show a person that they don’t need to know everything in order to use the system.
You’re on the right track here Wayne and I look forward to hearing more about this in the future.
Regards,
David Haines
Hey David,
Welcome to my blog and thanks for your insight. You make a great point. I don’t want people to feel like they need to know how to do everything when they start – that’s never a good business model. But through the process, they will begin to see the big picture and will automatically learn the skills to do things themselves.
WE Inc. all the way to the bank.
There is more wealth (knowledge, skills and money) in a collective than there ever will be as a solo act.
Find the right people and the sky is the limit.

Hey Maria,
Yes, network marketing is not a business you can build on your own. It takes a team of people working with you to help you create success.
Hey Wayne, you do have right in all the recitation you talking about.
And you have absolutely right that “We, Inc” can be a very strong way to leverage, but who will it leverage?
It will first and foremost leverage those who already have a strong “You, Inc”, but it can definitely leverage a new team member quickly if he / she has the desire to simultaneously self-built a strong “You, Inc ”

Hey Sherman,
I’m glad to have inspired you man. Well, you can only take the volunteers for projects like these. It’s those people who will propel the project to success.
Hi Wayne,
excellent subject – guess what, I wanted to write about that because the trouble with “You Inc” and becoming an expert is only too obvious once you fully understood Robert Kiyosaki’s ideas, for example. The question: Who winds up doing the work ? Experts are usually hired by entrepreneurs to do the dirty work for them, so being an expert and and entrepreneur doesn’t go very well together. The expert does the work, and the entrepreneur collects the bulk of the money.
Thanks for sharing this excellent post.
Take care
Oliver

Hey Oliver,
Thanks, that’s a great insight. Robert Kiyosaki writes about this in his book “Cashflow Quadrant”. The specialists and experts want to do everything themselves. They ARE central to the business, where as big business thinkers want to take themselves out of the equation and build a team of people around them who can get the job done. Good stuff!
Hi Wayne,
I have seen this in network marketing before and it does work, for people who are new they get a better sense of being part of something.
It’s not so overwhelming with learning all this new stuff. Great post.

That’s the idea. To get someone to come in and contribute a little bit of their own efforts and get a result, which will increase their believe and motivation in the business.
This is key – consistency. How many do you think is dropping out before they have passed 2 years? Must be at least 80%. Thx for a good read!
