It's high time to Climb Out of this Pit

Sir Richard Branson

Right now I’m reading Business Stripped Bare by Sir Richard Branson. It’s a fascinating read about how the Virgin Group has evolved from a humble mail-order music retailer to one of the world’s most recognised brands, along with all the trials and tribulations it has faced along the way.

But a particularly inspiring story caught my attention in the early chapters of the book. Sir Richard was visiting his private game reserve in South Africa. A village woman came up to him and asked to borrow $300 to buy a sewing machine and employ six people so she could kick start her business. Moreover, she promised to return the money in 3 months.

Impressed by her focus and determination, he gave her the $300, expecting to never see it again. He was wrong.

To his surprise, a few months later, when he returned to visit again, six women came up and presented him with gifts of exquisite cotton pillows and tribal robes, and the $300 he had lent to the entrepreneurial seamstress. She, herself couldn’t make it, for she was too busy selling the products at the markets.

There is a very strong entrepreneurial movement in Africa at the moment. People are taking responsibility for their own welfare and empowering themselves and others.

They are starting their own businesses with the benevolent help of banks who lend small amounts of money at low interest rates.

Meanwhile, in the Western world, it seems capitalism has been brought to its knees. The very industry that is helping Africans climb out of poverty, has corrupted the economic powerhouses with their greed.

Fellow blogger, Peter Fuller recently wrote an excellent article about shaky retirement plans of many middle aged people.

They simply don’t have enough. And the Government is not coming to the rescue because it can’t.

Starting your own business is pretty much the only way out of oblivion. By the time you realize where you’re headed, it’s too late for anything else. You’ve reached the end of your employable life – there are younger, cheaper people who can do the same job.

The word “entrepreneur” has been considered a dirty word in the past – often associated with greed, monopolies, money getting and to hell with the rest.

Now, many people don’t have a choice. It’s either fall into poverty, or to be so driven to avoid poverty that you risk everything, and work like a maniac for 17 hours a day for months at a time with absolutely no promise of success.

It’s crazy, irrational, and totally misunderstood by people closest to you. But it’s worth it.

Fortunately, there has never been a time human history where it’s easier for an individual to start their own business. The internet will be the saviour.

Downside risks have been all but eliminated. If you know what you’re doing, you can test if a new business idea will work in a matter of days, before you go all in.

If you’re an absolute beginner, there is no better business school than network marketing, in my opinion. It’s not that you have everything setup for you already from the products to the compensation, as great as that is, but it’s the people you meet that make all the difference.

So if you are building yourself a business, or struggling to put one together, I honour you. As long as you are honest, you are doing a very noble thing.

The world needs YOU. Never give in.

To your MLM success,

Wayne Wu

Good stuff Wayne

I am always amazed when some people put down mlm or other business opportunities.

There solution is always the same, get a job.

They will always analyze the negativity of doing it yourself but they never analyze what having a job will lead to.

They will say things like 95% fail with their own businesses but what they won’t tell you is that 99% who take the job route end up poor in retirement.

btw, thanks for the mention

Hey Peter,

My pleasure, it was a great article you wrote.

It certainly is frustrating when people don’t see the big picture, but that’s life, and that’s the challenge of being a network marketer. In time, many people will come to realize the truth.

This morning (Danish time) I got an email from one of my online friends who have tried many different “programs”.

For three days since he asked if he could talk to me about how “they” find it “real” business. I wrote that I would obviously like to talk to him about and that we just might find one day that could fit us both.

But back to the email this morning I received, I quote from the email:
“I hope that you will forgive me and yourself, and join me in doing it the right Way, this time?? Build you own Team First, For FREE, as a partner with Us. The solution is here now.”

Conclusion on your post Wayne: “Focus” and “Discipline”

That is a great post Wayne.

Really entrepreneurs are what create jobs and gets the economy going. So really you could say that it is our duty to be entrepreneurs if we want to save the economy, not only in our country, but around the world.

Again great post Wayne. Thank you for sharing it.

Hey Michael,

Welcome to my blog. Thanks for the compliments. You said it… where would we be without entrepreneurs? They take all the risk and provide great jobs and opportunities for many people, and they are generally the first to take the flack.

But it’s well worth it. Here’s to entrepreneurship!

Hey Wayne,

You know what, I just had a discussion about this with my mother lol Too bad you weren’t there to back me up, but I think I handle myself pretty good lol. I totally agree with you on that. The best way that you can to avoid poverty is to start a business. Taking the network marketing route would be the easiest because all the products or services are already there. All you have to do is market them. Thanks for sharing

Hey Sherman,

Ha ha… well, I’m glad you handled the situation with your mother well. It’s often those who are closest to us who have the most trouble understanding us.

Very refreshing read Wayne. I had heard of oganisations that make loans to people in third world countries to start in their own business. And from all reports the number of people who actually returned the money far outweighs the number of loan defaults in the Western world.

You have reminded me also of the reason I started in online marketing…the retirement factor as pointed out by Peter. Doubly so because my son is eleven and in nine years I will be up for retirement. The cost of raising a child means at retirement age I am unlikely to have any savings. So for anyone who thinks it’s too late to start a business because of age you should think again.

Hey Dennis,

Very good points my friend. And you have a very big WHY too, so best of luck to you.

And with the loans being returned, it just shows if you put faith in good people, they will honour their commitment.

Hi Wayne,

inspiring post about entrepreneurial spirit, large and small. I personally believe it’s not human nature to be employed, entrepreneurship and making a fortune – that’s human nature.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Wayne,

What a great story! I’m so glad you shared it here.

It’s too bad ‘entrepreneur’ has turned into a dirty word for so many people.

Even after knowing the opportunity some people just have a very hard time wrapping their mind around anything outside of a ‘regular job’.

Thanks for sharing another great post!

Hi Wayne,

Great and inspiring post. This will certainlly work someone into the right mindset to get going and working on their business.

You are right; the days of comfort and happily laboring away at your J.O.B, expecting all to be rosy at the end of your career are definitely not in the horizon.

Robert Kiyosaki’s book, ‘Rich Dad’s Prophecy’ sheds some light on the not-so-bright future that awaits, if we live in a state where we expect our jobs, or someone else for that matter to take care of us.

Like you rightfully put it, the one true way to guarantee your future survival, is to get into business. Only YOU can guarantee your success and your future.

Times have certainly changed, and with each day, inflation eats away at people’s’ income. At the same time, people are losing jobs and others are having their salaries frozen. I can’t think of any other reason to be an entrepreneur.

Thanks for a great post.

Michael
