How many star recruits do you need in order earn the “big money” in network marketing? Most leaders will tell you that their big money comes from only a handful of superstars in their downline.
MLM legend Tom “Big Al” Schreiter claims that less than 10 great frontline partners is enough to bring you true financial freedom. Now there’s a thought.
Just how do you find this handful of super high quality people? That’s the biggest challenge of any network marketer. It’s like finding needles in a haystack.
A “shortcut” is to use a magnet. In the business world, that magnet is GOOD MARKETING.
NEVER buy leads for starters…
MLM leads related keywords are amongst the most searched in Google for this industry. They are also the highest Cost-Per-Click for Google advertisers (the lead companies, that is…)
That means there are thousands of people wasting a fortune buying leads for their business opportunity. If you’ve ever bought what have labeled as “quality MLM leads”, you’ll know they are anything but.
It’s akin to seeking financial freedom by investing in mutual funds. It’s just not possible – you have no control.
In his 31 years of professional network marketing, my mentor Michael Dlouhy has NEVER met anybody who has built a successful business buying leads.
How many leads do you need?
You don’t need to learn how to generate massive quantities of leads either, as has been touted all over the internet. It’s not quantity, but the quality of MLM leads that matters.
Actually, if you think critically about this, how is it possible for you as a network marketer, to follow up and build a trustworthy relationship with your prospects if you’re generating 100 leads a day?
Automatically? Through autoresponders? Hmmm… There might be a human element missing there.
Recently, I received an email newsletter from Perry Marshall on the differences between B2B (business-to-business) and Consumer marketing and why you can’t market to these to groups in the same manner.
I found his article very interesting, and it applies just as well in our industry of network marketing.
Some will tell you there’s no difference. You’re marketing to people. People are people, right?
Wrong! You want committed professional networkers in your business, not tire kickers. You can’t market to these two groups of people in the same way.
A professional networker is someone who…
- Regardless of what they have achieved, desires more success in network marketing
- Has experience as a distributor and/or…
- Has a good understanding of the industry works.
If you want quality MLM leads for your business, here’s what you have to do differently…
- Brand Yourself. People join people, NOT companies or products. Be professional, but not corporate.
- Position yourself as a credible expert. You must have a good understanding of the industry yourself. Learn about companies and business models. Visit websites such as MLM Watchdog to keep informed about scams and legalities.
- Experienced prospects don’t act on pure emotion. They’ve got too much experience for that. So pertaining to my last point, you need to be more factual with your marketing. Use real life examples to explain your point if you need to.
- Never over hype or over promise. Tire kickers are attracted by all sorts of hype, but good quality prospects won’t be, because they’ve been down that road and it sucked. As soon as you start making unbelievable claims, you’ve lost them.
The more skills you learn and the more knowledge you gain, the more valuable you become to the quality MLM leads you want to attract. And remember, you only need a few to build a genuine fortune.
So go forth, and get yourself a Ph.D. in this industry! Start here…
To your MLM success,
Wayne Wu

Hey Wayne,
I wanted to give a non hype statement in this reply so I went and did a count. I had 17 emails today that claimed I could either:
a. Be in profit today
b. make money just by joining the system and nothing else
c. make ten thousand dollars this week
d. become a millionaire in less than 90 days
(I got these out of the spam folder)
The sad truth is, that people are actually buying into this nonsense. Not one of these emails even had the persons name attached.
Talk about branding. If I was spreading these kinds of lies I wouldn’t attach my name to it either.

Hey Chris,
“I wouldn’t attach my name to it either…”
There are some wild cowboys out there in our industry.
Desperate people will fall for this stuff because they’re the real targets. If they can just get enough email address, they’ll get just enough people to send them their details and then it’s hell for the victims from there.
If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
That’s a great post, Wayne! I’ve learned a lot recently about branding myself and I see the wisdom in that. Our downlines are really owned by the company and you never know when something will happen and you will lose your downline. Branding yourself ensures that you will have people who follow and believe in YOU!
One thing that I do appreciate about the one of the MLM companies that I am with is that they don’t even permit associates to buy lists because they only want quality associates.

Hey Stacy,
Well it’s great a company should discourage its distributors from buying lists in my opinion because they can be a big waste of money.
And yes, while your downline is “owned” by the company, they don’t own the relationships you have with your people. That’s where the power of branding and trust building comes in.
Wayne,
You make several great points. I will be honest, I know more people than I can count that are very, very successful buying leads. These people are in my organization. The only problem and this is why I WILL NEVER buy a lead again is…
it’s a crap shoot. These people pay A LOT OF money to purchase these leads and either have the money or just pretty good at converting. The leads are extremely expensive and more people fail at it than succeed.
I lost plenty of money buying leads and vowed never purchase them like that again. The problem with the people I know that purchase leads are using a generic system. So they are not gaining any credibility with the work that they put in.
Thought I would share, thanks for the value.

Hey Tommy,
Thanks for sharing those insights. I appreciate it. One of the issues you discussed here is they are extremely expensive, so most people won’t be able to buy enough to get their business to pay for that expense.
If you’re a full time networker with money to burn, lead buying may work, but the fact is, most people are part timers who won’t have enough resources to have the same success as a full timer.
Hey Wayne,
Great job! Those four components are essential if anyone wants to have any success with their business. That is why it is important to invest in ‘You’ first and then everything else will flow from there.
Chat with you later…

Hey Josh,
You said it man. Invest in “YOU” first, then everything else will flow from there.
Hey Wayne,
You touched on some very good points. One comment about buying leads though, I know tons of people who do this and are extremely successful. However, it takes a lot of effort if the leads that are bought are not “HIGHLY qualified”. If anyone is going to buy leads, do it from some who understand lead generation and is in the home business market.
Given that, I am all for generating your own leads. So a part of me agrees with you and one part of me does not.
Oh well, I know the message you are sending is of extreme benefit. Thanks for passing this on.
Have a good day,

Hey Jerome,
Thanks for sharing your view my friend. That’s the problem with most of the leads that people buy… they are not highly qualified.
I do want to take the long view in terms of success as well. I actually want to know if someone is retired and actually earning residual income today purely from buying leads themselves and teaching their downline to buy leads. This is the test that will really show if buying leads works.
Hi Wayne,
You are definitely right that you don’t need a lot of leads to be successful. I think the main advantage to getting a lot of leads is so you have a list to sell affiliate products to, and only a few will come through your pipeline as qualified prospects.
Derek Alvarez´s last [type] ..Jerome Ratliff shares his story on mindset…
Hi Derek,
I guess that’s the concept of the sales funnel
If people are buying those affiliate products, then it means they are a hot prospect, so you’d think it’s a good idea to contact them by phone. But many people don’t, do they?
Hi Wayne,
It’s not about how many leads you generate but that you are generating the right kind of leads. It depends on what type of shadow you cast, if you seem needy, desperate and hopeful well thats the kind of people you will attract to your business. Great post and thanks for sharing.

Hey Tristram,
Welcome to my blog. It’s good to see you here, my friend.
Well said, it’s not how many leads you generate, but what kind they are. Desperate advertising attracts desperate people who don’t really have a great chance of success. Whereas helpful advertising will attract to you business builders.
I have always said that you don’t have to recruit those 100 people a year into your business to make great money. I will take 15 of the RIGHT people over, 1,000 tire kickers with money any day of the week.
Great points,
Eric

I love it I love it I love it!!! This was a great post. So valuable!!! I can actually relate to this. I use to buy leads, and like you said, they were a bunch of tire kickers. Doing it the “correct” way has made network marketing a lot more fun for me and less stressful. Thanks for sharing Wayne
