Here’s another principle I learned from Big Al. Keep this mantra at forefront of your mind the next time you’re talking to anybody: If there is no disagreement, there would be no conversation between two or more individuals.
If two individuals were in full agreement with each other, the conversation would stop. In order to participate in or take control of a conversation, you must disagree with the person talking.
For example, I’m a huge Formula One fan, and I’m chatting with other fans and I say “Michael Schumacher is the best driver in the HISTORY of F1!”, another fan will surely say “Yes BUT, he deliberately crashed into Damon Hill so he could win a championship!”
If everybody was in agreement, they would just say “Uh ha…” and that would be the end of the conversation. It can get pretty boring when everybody agrees with each other.
So how does this apply in network marketing?
Get to the truth!
Well, you can use this principle of disagreement to qualify your prospects. More specifically, you can actually find out their deepest desires if you listen carefully enough.
When you really listen, you can tell exactly if your network marketing business opportunity is going to be something that could help your prospect or not.
This technique works equally well if you just met a new person, or if you already know what they do as a profession. It’s an alternative to the “Oh really? How does that work?” technique.
How NOT to talk to a prospect!
Let’s pretend we’re at a party and you’re chit chatting with someone you’ve just met…
You: “What do you do for a living?”
Prospect: “I’m a dentist.”
You: “Oh… It must be terrible being a dentist! You have to smell people’s bad breath all the time and clean all that gunk between their teeth, wear those annoying protective masks and latex gloves in case you get their blood on your hands, endlessly clean medical instruments, you must hate being a dentist!”
Remember, in order to have a conversation, there must be disagreement. What’s the prospect going to say?
Prospect: “No way! I love being a dentist. I get paid really well, I have a nice car, I love talking to people and making their teeth and gums look and feel better, and making them walk away with fresh breath and smile on their face, I just l-o-v-e being a dentist!
Now, does that sound like someone who’s looking for your business opportunity? Obviously not, it sounds like someone who loves their job, simply because they’re disagreeing in order to have a conversation with you. Therefore you’ve turned a perfectly neutral prospect into a BAD prospect.
How TO talk to a prospect!
Let’s try our conversation again with the same prospect, but change a few things…
You: “What do you do for a living?”
Prospect: “I’m a dentist.”
You: “Wow, you must l-o-v-e being a dentist! You get to meet people everyday and make them walk away with fresh breath and a smile on their face, and I heard it was a great way to make lots and lots of money!”
In order to participate or take control of a conversation, there must be disagreement. So what’s the prospect going to say now?
Prospect: “Oh no! Man, I hate being a dentist! I have to clean out disgusting gunk and smell bad breath every single day. I’m constantly sterilizing medical instruments and it can be a real hassle running a small business. Sometimes I’d do anything to not be a dentist!”
Good prospect or good prospect? This time we turned a perfectly neutral prospect into a GOOD prospect simply by changing what we said. Nothing to do with the prospect, it was what we said that mattered.
The amazing secret…
Is it now obvious how some people can have lots of prospects and others struggle to get none?
The secret is we don’t find good prospects, but we create good prospects with what we say and what we do. Isn’t that amazing?
Most network marketers are trying to find good prospects. They’ll find them eventually, if they don’t quit, but when they do, they mostly succeed in turning them into BAD prospects.
Let that sink in…
I’ll be back with Part 5 and finally, Part 6 soon. Stay tuned.

Wayne Wu

Action is the best teacher my friend!
Hey Wayne,
For sure, disagreements are a good thing when working with a prospect. What’s really important is to listen to what they saying and never interrupt them. That’s a big deal and can really jeopardize their results.
Have a great day,
Jerome Ratliff
Hey Jerome,
Listening is something that network marketers need to do A LOT more of. It seems most of us have no ears and 3 mouths!!!
Funny, 3 mouths. LOL
It’s true though.

Hey Wayne,
I like that technique my friend.
I will be honest, my gut feeling is, the “negatively loaded” angle may backfire with some people, but the positive one will “ween” out all the job haters real quick.
Nice one my friend.

Hey Hector,
Thanks man. I appreciate it. It’s such an interesting area of psychology and I’m loving sharing the knowledge.
I had a quick phone call with my team last night and made the point that they should always assume everyone they talk to is a neutral prospect. You only determine if they are good or bad after you have talked to them.
I’ll have to get back to them tonight and let them know that there has to be disagreement and possibly some reverse psychology mixed in as well.

I have saved each of the series so far. This is some really great stuff for talking to people. I think in most people’s minds that online marketing doesn’t involve talking to anyone. You still have to talk to people, but with the right funnel, you are talking to prospects that want what you have.
Good stuff,

Hey mi amigo! I feel identified big time with the prospect (for the record, I’m a dentist) jaja. Human psychology is funny sometimes, there’s no doubt about it. This post has been revealing, I’ll apply this tip right away, thanks again my friend for sharing, you always hit the target.
