Rejection Free “Old School” Network Marketing Part 2 – The Question Every Networker Hates

by Wayne Wu on May 7, 2010

in Prospecting & Sponsoring

A question that nearly all network marketers dread goes something like this: “So, what do you do for a living?” …or… “What do you do in your spare time?”

Here’s an interesting thought to consider: when other people ask you what you do for a living, do they really care about what you do for a living, or do they just want to make casual conversation? Mostly they just want to make casual conversation.

Even though I’m a “new school” online network marketer, I’ve been asked this question many times when I go to public places, like the gym.

And believe me, I’ve made the other guy feel sorry for asking me a simple question as “What do you do for a living?” with my vague answers. (See… we do need to be good both online AND offline!)

Are you a drug dealer?…

Here’s a typical awkward conversation between me and Mr. Neutral Prospect that you might be able to relate to…

“So, what do you do for a living?”

“I’m building my own business”

“Cool, what’s your business?”

“Um… uh… I buy products at wholesale, sell ‘em at retail… um… but you can’t get ‘em in stores, you kinda need to know somebody who has access to ‘em… and uh… I’m building my own distribution network and…”

Mr. Neutral Prospect starts backing away thinking “Oh my goodness, I’m talking to a drug dealer!” And I have successfully turned a neutral prospect into a BAD prospect on demand!

How about a Superstar Space Commander?…

Well since that didn’t work, I’ll tweak the answer and give it a bit more detail so I won’t sound like a drug dealer the next time. Along comes Mrs. Neutral Prospect and she asks me…

“What do you do for a living?”

“I’m building a business”

“Cool, what’s the business?”

“I’m with a company that has exclusive products that I buy at wholesale and sell at retail and I can sponsor 5 people frontline and build 5 legs and earn generational bonuses of 10% down 6 generations and once I earn bonuses down 6 generations in all 5 legs I become a superstar space commander guru and can then receive the superstar space commander guru bonus which will put an extra million dollars into my bank account every month… blah, blah, blah”

And with that, I have successfully turned a neutral prospect into a BAD prospect, on demand!

Can you relate to this?

Set more goals? Be more positive?

This is the problem that so many new network marketers have. They simply don’t know what to say and what to do, which is why they get rejected, frustrated and quit.

Their upline’s solution is to set more goals, be more positive, build a bigger belief in the business, get motivated, listen to more tapes and go to more meetings. Hmmm…

Here’s the good news…

If you could get a good reaction instead of a bad reaction from your prospect when you answered “What do you do for a living?”, would ever fear that question again?

No, you’d welcome it!

So here’s how to get a good reaction from your prospects. Introducing Big Al’s…

“Oh Really? How Does That Work?” Technique

This is the response that you can get from every prospect when you answer the dreaded question “What do you do for a living?”

Here’s how you get it:

You: “I teach people how to fire their boss!”
Prospect: “Oh Really? How does that work?”

…or…

You: “I show people how to get a 50% raise and they don’t even have to ask their boss!”
Prospect: “Oh really? How does that work?”

…or…

You: “I show people how to get an extra paycheck every month!”
Prospect: “Oh really? How does that work?”

Mix BENEFITS with CURIOSITY and you can’t go wrong. Hmm… smells like copywriting. Verbal copy that is.

Look forward to the next time you’re asked “So, what do you do for a living?”

Back soon with Part III

Hey Wayne,

That is a question that new people have trouble answering. Today they are working at xyz and then on Monday they started a business. Good thing you are putting this together.

Have a great weekend!

Hey Wayne,

It’s a skill we should all learn. We all know that we have a great opportunity, but there’s nothing worse than doing it injustice by not exposing it in the right way.

Hi there Wayne,

This is one area so many people stumble over. I’m not sure why. All that matters is you put in a way that it’s something others would like to have.

Have an awesome weekend,

Wayne,

I took this one out of Todd Falcone’s book, “So what do you do”
ANSWER: “I put alarm clock companies out of business!”

You show some good examples. It is like split
testing and going with the best results.

Hey Tommy,

That’s a good one! Yes, it is very much like split testing. And the more you do it, the better you’ll be at it.

Hey Ilka,

Good to see you here. Todd Falcone’s comeback is pretty cool and blunt :D Remember to add BENEFITS to CURIOSITY also though.

Hey Derek,

Yeah, it’s interesting. Conversing and copywriting both trigger the same psychological mechanisms. You can learn to engage someone with just the words you say. Brilliant!

Great post Wayne!

Creating curiosity works a treat!

Answer in a way that generates interest, give a brief answer, then change the subject…. always leave people wanting more.

Hey Seth,

Welcome to my home on the internet. Thanks for visiting. It’s great to see you here.

Oh, you can tell them you’re a proud network marketer, and you SHOULD when the time is right, but it probably won’t serve you well straight away because most people don’t know what that is. When you’re talking to a prospect, it’s ALL about the prospect. You’ve gotta be in their world, not your own.

Hey Wayne,
I used to stumble over this question myself. People would ask me this and I would get diarrhea of the mouth. Now, I pull some random job out of the air that gets them asking questions.

Anything can be a good conversation starter,

Hey Eric,

Diarrhea? Yuck! Haha… as long as those random jobs generate curiosity!
